Residents of Rantoul, Monticello, Clinton, Hoopeston, Paris, DeWitt and Wapella are listed among the communities slated to receive broadband service, according to USDA  public information officer Joan Messina.  Open Range Communications, the company responsible for the project, plans to use WiMax technology and anticipates the project will be complete within the next five years.  For more information visit: http://www.news-gazette.com/news/2008/03.27/towns_slated_to_receive_service

Announced by the Governor's office 12/04/07

The Illinois Finance Authority has issued $70 million in bonds to finance the construction of the new Theory and Computing Sciences Building to be located on Argonne's campus in DuPage.  The new facility will allow Illinois scientists to apply breakt5hroughs in supercomputing and pursue advances in nanotechnology, climate change, protein modeling and more, solidifying the fastest growing research program in Argonne's history.  The Argonne National Labroratory is a renowned R&D center that brings the world's brightest scientists and engineers together.

WIRELESS

NOW Wireless, a wireless Internet service provider headquartered in Jerseyville, is finishing an RUS loan application to "light up" 6,000 square miles of East-Central Illinois. NOW is also pulling together a consortium of Illinois groups to look into "lighting up" other regions of the State.

Macoupin and Montgomery Counties

VINCE DEMUZIO RURAL BROADBAND PILOT

In Montgomery and Macoupin counties, DSL is widely available, but the counties lack high-end (past T1 speeds) broadband infrastructure. A state Request for Proposals targeted at any company or group of companies willing to improve the broadband infrastructure was released in mid-February. Five proposals were received by the state in early August. Information about the RFP is available at www.purchase.state.il.us

Madison County

Bus Wi-Fi to start October 1

Madison County Transit riders with wireless Internet-equipped laptops will be able to surf the web on some buses starting October 1.  The service will be free and how-to instructions will be posted on the buses. Parvus, the company providing the service will also offer a hotline to help customers.

*Northern Illinois Technology Triangle (NITT)

FIBER OPTIC ROCKFORD-ROCHELLE LINK

When completed in mid 2008, NITT will be a high speed, large capacity fiber-optic network that will form a triangle whose perimeter is 175 miles long. Existing dark (unused) fiber has been leased to make up the northern and southern legs of the NITT. Because there was no existing fiber to complete the western leg of this triangle, 30 miles of new cable had to be installed. Building this section was critical, as it would complete the loop that is essential to provide the redundancy of service that assures reliability for the entire network. The Illinois Department of Transportation also had a need to construct fiber along the same section and agreed to complete this fiber build by November 2007, allowing the NITT access to the dark fiber needed to complete the triangle. In addition, the City of Rochelle is constructing a multi million-dollar technology center to distribute NITT services locally and long the I-39 corridor.

The state paid $2.5 million to install 26 miles of fiber-optic line on I-39.

WIRELESS BROADBAND

Rock Island is currently served by Solo Direct Connect. The current Solo Wireless Network (50% completed) provides business broadband services to most of the Greater Quad City area. End users can choose plans ranging from $100/mo.(1.5Mbps down/500Kbps up) to $400/mo.(5Mbps down/1.5Mbps up) with several intermediate plans in between. In addition to the previously stated plans, which require no contracts, Solo also offers full T-1 class wireless services. Solo Direct Connect also holds 2.5Ghz licenses and plans to fully deploy WiMAX services soon. Projected pricing for WiMAX plans range from $20 (256Kbps), $30 (512Kbps) to $40 (1Mbps).

Quad-Cities Online

Moline Dispatch Publishing Company is using Nortel WiMAX technology to deliver high-speed broadband access throughout the Quad-Cities metro area through its Internet service provider (ISP), Quad-Cities Online (QCO). Service is expected to be available for subscription before the end of 2007.

QCO's WiMAX network offers a high-speed alternative to DSL and cable Internet. Engineering studies show the first phase of QCO's WiMAX network providing service to the Illinois Quad-Cities and the south sections of Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa. Additional service locations are being evaluated.

The network will use 2.5 GHz EBS spectrum on lease from Black Hawk College. The long-term lease will serve the community well as QCO has agreed to offer the college access to 30% of its network capacity for Black Hawk's own services and telecommunications needs as a public/private partnership. Also, local government officials in the area are talking with QCO and Black Hawk College about possible uses of the WiMAX network for municipal services and applications and public safety.

The Moline Dispatch Publishing Company also holds the LMDS high-capacity wireless licenses for both the Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities and for Rockford, Illinois. The ulta-high capacity (up to 500 Mbps full duplex) protected bandwidth of LMDS makes it both an excellent backup for fiber networks in some settings and a replacement in others.

CONNECT SI

Connect SI is a 20-county community and economic development initiative in southern Illinois. Of particular note is the work of the Network Provider Community of Interest (COI) within Connect SI. The Network Providers COI consists of Internet service providers from several companies including telephone companies, cable companies, wireless providers, power companies and independent local exchange carriers. A GIS mapping initiative underway is being used to identify where gaps in broadband service exist. Market data including the addresses of students, faculty, and staff of area colleges and universities is being mapped to create return-on-investment business cases for expanding infrastructure into unserved areas. The final maps will help determine how to hasten the arrival of affordable broadband throughout the Connect SI region.

Stark County

SMALL BUSINESS WEB TRAINING

Following a major investment by Verizon to provide DSL, specifically in the Wyoming area, the Stark County Economic Development Partnership has been working with the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University to help small businesses use the Internet. With financial support from the Verizon Foundation, the IIRA and SCEDP are working with more than 20 local businesses to provide web development and marketing seminars. They also provide on-site technical assistance to help business owners manage their web sites. The UI Extension Service will provide some of the Internet training. High school students will attend the seminars. This project follows a statewide initiative funded by the USDA-RD Rural Community Development Initiative in which the IIRA assisted non-profits and government units improve their web sites.

Stephenson County

RURAL WIRELESS INITIATIVE

Aero Group has completed the first phase of the Stephenson County rural wireless initiative.  It has connected its operations to fiber-optic cable.  Aero is now connected to one of the Midwest's largest fiber optic network.  Aero Group is based in Freeport.  This upgrade will benefit both Aero Group and Freeport in enhancing both the community and economy.
